There are two major online companies right now which offer consumers a free credit score based on the information found in their credit reports. To be clear, these are not the FICO credit score, which is the industry standard. But the scores are based on the same data and should be a good representation of your FICO score.

Citigroup, the fourth-largest credit-card lender by purchase volume in the U.S., is partnering with Fair Isaac Co., the provider of the credit score most widely used by lenders, to provide its customers with their FICO Score beginning in January.

Now through Sunday November 16, 2014 — Wells Fargo is offering customers a free view of their credit scores as well as complimentary credit reports, according to a statement from the bank. This is the third year the bank is offering its Free Credit Score promotion, which more than 800,000 customers have taken advantage of since it first rolled out in 2012.

These are services that people pay good money for and Credit Karma, a company that isn’t affiliated with any of the credit bureaus, is giving it away for free.
